Why Clean Beauty Matters

Clean Beaty Skin Care- Clean Beauty Coalition

Beauty shouldn’t come at the cost of our health.

Yet for decades, products marketed to Black women and children have contained toxic ingredients linked to serious health risks—including hormone disruption, infertility, fibroids, and breast cancer. In fact, Black women are exposed to 60% more toxic beauty product ingredients than white women, and studies show that 1 in 12 products marketed to Black women are rated as “highly hazardous.”

At the Clean Beauty Coalition, we believe no one should have to choose between self-care and safety.

Clean beauty is more than a trend—it’s a call for justice. We’re here to challenge outdated industry norms, fight for ingredient transparency, and demand safer, more equitable standards in personal care. Because protecting our communities starts with protecting what we put on our skin.

Our Mission

At the Clean Beauty Coalition, our mission is to eliminate toxic chemicals from beauty and personal care products through bold advocacy, accessible education, and transformative policy reform. We champion ingredient transparency, environmental responsibility, and health equity—especially for women and children of color who are disproportionately impacted by harmful ingredients. By educating brands, retailers, and communities—and advancing science-backed standards—Together we are setting new benchmarks for a safer, more just, and sustainable beauty industry.

  • Beauty Justice

Beauty should be a source of empowerment, not exposure to harm. At the Clean Beauty Coalition, we believe in a future where beauty products are free of toxins, truly inclusive, and environmentally responsible. We work to hold brands and retailers accountable, provide resources for consumers, and create pathways for policy changes that protect the health and well-being of all individuals.

  • Environmental Justice

Clean beauty goes beyond ingredients—it’s about sustainability. We partner with brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging, ethical sourcing, and responsible production practices that reduce their environmental impact.

  • Health & Racial Equity

Studies show that Black women are disproportionately exposed to toxic beauty products linked to cancer, reproductive harm, and other serious health issues. We educate consumers, challenge outdated regulations, and push for systemic changes to ensure safety and transparency across the beauty industry

  • The Future of Clean Beauty

With evolving regulations like MOCRA (Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act), we help brands navigate compliance, create safer formulations, and ensure consumer trust through our Clean Beauty Coalition Certification Program.

  • People & Planet

At the Clean Beauty Coalition, we don’t just talk about change—we take action. Our key initiatives include:

Retailer Roadmap – Holding retailers accountable for offering clean, non-toxic beauty products and eliminating harmful ingredients from their shelves.

Youth Advocacy – Educating Gen Z and Gen X on the health risks of toxic beauty products and the importance of ingredient transparency.

Industry Reform – Partnering with chemists, scientists, and policymakers to drive regulatory change and set stronger safety standards.

Sustainability Partnerships – Collaborating with mission-aligned brands committed to eco-conscious production, ethical sourcing, and circular beauty practices.
