The Hidden Dangers in Synthetic Braiding Hair

Braided hairstyles are not only culturally significant—they’re expressions of identity, strength, and style. But recent studies reveal a troubling truth: synthetic braiding hair may contain toxic chemicals that threaten both health and beauty justice.

1. What’s Really in Synthetic Hair?

Consumer Reports tested ten popular brands—like Magic Fingers and Sensationnel—and found carcinogens in every one. Three contained benzene, a known leukemia-causing agent, while nine had unsafe levels of lead. All samples also emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as acetone, which can irritate the respiratory system and increase cancer risk over time  .

2. How Exposure Happens

  • Dermal contact: Chemicals sit on the scalp for weeks and can be absorbed through the skin .

  • Inhalation: Hot water dips and flame-sealing during installation release VOCs into the air .

  • Transfer: Handling synthetic fibers can spread toxins to the hands, food, and face .

3. Who Is Most at Risk?

  • Braiders: Constant handling of synthetic fibers with little protection increases exposure .

  • Clients (largely Black women): Protective styles are worn for weeks—prolonging exposure .

  • Communities of color: Disproportionately impacted by lack of access to safer alternatives .

4. The Industry Gap

Synthetic braiding hair is minimally regulated by the FDA, which does not require pre-market safety testing for cosmetics. Consumer Reports and advocacy groups are urging for increased oversight and accountability  .

5. Moving Toward Safer Alternatives

  • Wash first: Soaking in apple cider vinegar may reduce chemical coatings, though it isn’t a full solution .

  • Explore plant-based options: Brands like Rebundle use banana fibers as biodegradable, safer alternatives .

  • Consider natural hair: While more expensive, human hair extensions remain a safer option .

Synthetic braiding hair may be easier to wear—but it may also be toxic. Discover why common braiding products contain carcinogens and lead, how exposure happens, and safer alternatives you can try.
